A Guide To New York Cafe Restos began with a specific, narrow question: which New York restaurants are actually licensed for outdoor seating, according to the city itself? Rather than build a directory from crowdsourced reviews or scraped listings of unclear origin, we went directly to the register maintained by the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, the agency responsible for issuing and tracking Sidewalk Café and Roadway Café licenses across all five boroughs.
Cleaning 1,284 Records Into Something Usable
A raw government license register isn't built for browsing, it's built for administrative recordkeeping. Turning that into a usable public directory meant de-duplicating records, standardizing business names and addresses for readability, filtering out expired or revoked licenses, and tagging each entry with the seating type, borough, and neighborhood detail that makes searching and filtering actually useful. What you see in the directory above, currently 1,284 active licenses, is the result of that cleaning process, not a raw data dump.
Adding Geographic Context the Raw Data Didn't Have
License records identify an address but don't inherently include the kind of geographic context that makes a directory easy to browse, mapped coordinates for the interactive map view, and consistent borough and neighborhood tagging for filtering. Building that layer on top of the source data is what turns a government register into something you can actually use to find outdoor seating near you, rather than a spreadsheet you'd need to cross-reference manually.
Keeping the Directory Current
Because license status changes over time, restaurants close, licenses expire, new licenses get issued, this directory is refreshed periodically against the underlying city data rather than treated as a one-time snapshot. Why We Don't Rank or Review
It's a deliberate choice that this directory doesn't include star ratings, reviews, or "best of" rankings. The value we're aiming to provide is accurate, verified information about where outdoor seating is legally authorized in New York City, sourced from the city's own records rather than opinion. What you actually think of any given restaurant is entirely up to you to discover once you're there.
